About the Nonprofit Sector

Guidestar: A national database of programmatic and financial information from more than 850,000 American nonprofit organizations.  

National Center for Charitable Statistics: The national repository of data on the nonprofit sector in the United States.

Chronicle of Philanthropy: This national newspaper on grants and giving provides a range of articles and other information online.  

California Association of Nonprofits:  The California Association of Nonprofits (CAN) is a statewide membership organization of diverse nonprofits dedicated to protecting, strengthening and promoting nonprofit organizations in California.  

Philanthropy Journal: Philanthropy Journal provides news, information and opinion about charitable giving, fundraising and management, focusing in particular on organizational effectiveness, donor engagement and collaboration.

Additional Funding Opportunities 

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance: This database houses all federal (U.S.) assistance programs available to: state and local governments (including the District of Columbia); domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals.

Foundation Center's RFP Bulletin: This listing of RFPs, which is published every Friday, provides a brief overview of current funding opportunities offered by foundations or other grant-making organizations.

GetGrants: This site helps visitors identify grant programs within the state of California’s agencies and departments.

Grants.gov: This is a listing of the annual grant funds available from the federal government for state, local and tribal governments, academia and research institutions, and nonprofits.

National Institute of Health's CRISP: This site contains a searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals and other research institutions. The database is maintained by the Office of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health.

National Institute of Mental Health Funding: This Web site contains information for researchers on grants, including links to grant application processes for active grantees.

U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services' GrantsNet: This site includes information on finding and exchanging information about Health and Human Services grant opportunities and other federal grant programs.

California Dept. of AgingThe department administers Older Americans Act programs for supportive services, in-home services and other programs/services for the elderly.

National Institute of Aging: Improve the health and well-being of older Americans through research, information dissemination and communication with the public.

NIH Senior Health.gov: Features authoritative, up-to-date and easy-to-understand health information for seniors.

Asthma
American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology: This organization provides resources to allergists, information on pollen count and allergy reports for patients and consumers.

Cancer
California Cancer Registry: The registry collects information about all cancers diagnosed in California

National Cancer Institute: This Web site provides a wealth of information including cancer topics, clinical trials, cancer statistics to develop strategies and policies for its prevention, treatment and control research and funding.

State Cancer Profiles: Provides cancer statistics in quick profiles, comparison tables, interactive graphs and maps in the states and counties.

Diabetes
American Diabetes Association: This is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy.

California Diabetes Control: The mission of this organization is to prevent, detect and intervene among persons at risk for diabetes mellitus and its complications to reduce the adverse personal and public impact of diabetes on California's diverse communities.

HIV/AIDS
California Office of AIDS: The office has responsibility for coordinating state programs, services and activities relating to HIV/AIDS.

CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention: The site provides information and resources on prevention of HIV/AIDS.

Obesity
American Obesity Association: The association is focused on changing public policy and perceptions about obesity.

CDC Nutrition & Physical Activity: The site addresses the role of nutrition and physical activity in improving the public's health and preventing and controlling chronic diseases.

Outbreaks
CDC Emergency Preparedness & Response: The Web site has information on all disease outbreaks.

Environmental Health 

California Air Resources Board: The board regulates sources of air pollution.

Central California Air Quality Studies: This is a multiyear effort of meteorological and air quality monitoring, emission inventory development, data analysis and air quality simulation modeling.

Environmental Protection Agency: Since 1970, the EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people.

South Coast Air Quality Management: The agency collects data on current air quality, provides forecasts and analyzes trends in levels of pollutants.

Grassroots Fundraising Journal: This site offers practical, how-to instruction on various fundraising strategies such as direct mail, special events, major gift campaigns, grant seeking and online fundraising.

The Foundation Center : The Foundation Center works to strengthen the nonprofit sector by advancing knowledge about U.S. philanthropy. This site contains a wealth of information and resources on foundations and grant seeking.

CA.GOV: The Web site provides a wealth of information on various California state departments.

Healthfinder: Healthfinder® has been recognized as a key resource for finding the best government and nonprofit health and human services information on the Internet.

FirstGov: Search millions of Web pages from federal and state governments, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.

FirstGov for Consumers: This is a "one-stop" link to a broad range of federal information resources available online. It is designed so that you can locate information by category (such as Food, Health, Product Safety, Your Money and Transportation).

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: The department has more than 300 programs that aim to protect the health of all Americans and provide essential human services to those who are least able to help themselves.

Health Care 

California Department of Health and Human Services: This department is one of the largest in the state government and administers a broad range of public and clinical health programs that provide health care services to Californians.

California Department of Managed Care: The department shares responsibility with everyone in managed care to ensure aggressive prevention and high quality health care, as well as cost-effective regulatory oversight.

California Department of Mental Health: The department provides resources in advocacy, education, innovation, outreach, understanding, oversight, monitoring, quality improvement and the provision of direct services.

California Directory of City/County Health Departments: This is a list of city and county health departments within California.

California HMO Report Card 2006: The agency publishes the Quality of Care Report Card each year to provide you with comparative information on the performance of California's largest HMOs and medical groups.

Medicare: Resource for Medicare beneficiaries, public agencies and private organizations that provide consumer information and services about the Medicare program and its health plan options.

Hospitals/Physicians 

American Medical Association's Physician Finder: AMA Physician Select provides basic professional information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States and its possessions, including more than 690,000 doctors of medicine (M.D.) and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine (D.O.).

American Board of Medical Specialities: The site provides basic information on licensed physicians with medical specialities in the United States. (Registration required.)

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations: Look for information on standards, survey processes on accredited hospitals.

California Nursing License Search: Locate registered nurses and continuing education providers.

Medical Board of California: Looks up license search for medical doctors in California.

California Department of Mental Health: The department provides resources in advocacy, education, innovation, outreach, understanding, oversight, monitoring, quality improvement and the provision of direct services.

California Institute for Mental Health: The organziation's mission is to "promote excellence in mental health services through training, technical assistance, research and policy development."

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration: This agency focuses on facilitating recovery for people with or at risk for mental or substance use disorders.

TechSoup: TechSoup provides a wide range of information and resources regarding technology issues for nonprofits.

TechSurveyor and TechAtlas: These two free Web-based planning tools work together to allow nonprofits to survey their current technology assets (TechSurveyor) and to engage in a technology planning process for the integration of technology more effectively into their organizations.
