Sacramento may be the hub of California’s political presence, but the diversity of territories served by The Endowment’s office there makes it an area of unique needs. Of California’s 58 counties, 26 are in this region. These range from urban to rural to what is defined as “frontier” — 11 people or less per square mile.
And, the health needs impacting the area are as diverse as it’s geography. Sacramento is a richly ethnic city, where racial disparities in health are evident. North and east of this hub, rural health is in a critical state, and telemedicine programs, in which video technology is used to diagnose and treat patients, have literally become lifesavers. A rapidly aging population is rich with needs: as younger people leave for greater employment opportunities, those left behind still require care. Community-based organizations have to work hard and do more with often scarce resources.
But solutions can be found. For example, a small community-based cancer resource center in Mendocino has implemented a groundbreaking patient/doctor consultation model for a major university as a result of its treatment program; within El Dorado County, a volunteer program works to advocate for seniors at risk for abuse.
