The Bay Area may be rich with romantic vistas, epicurean delights and diverse, rich cultures, but it is also a community entrenched in high rates of homelessness, immigrant and access issues, astronomical costs of living and declining payrolls. Through The Endowment’s Greater Bay Area regional office, staff members work with the Bay Area communities to address issues ranging from violence to language access, occupational safety health education to HIV infection.
Health needs of Bay Area residents are not being met for a number of reasons. The economic downturn continues to affect unemployed individuals and families who are forced to choose between health care and meeting basic living needs. Moreover, low-income residents, often plagued with complex needs such as environmental threats to their health, have the least access to health insurance and affordable care. Finally, the Bay Area community clinics are experiencing growing waiting lists as they work to accommodate high numbers of immigrants and low-income seniors.
To address concerns such as these, The Endowment has invested in programs ranging from an effort to coordinate health services for homeless seniors to one that teaches Spanish-speaking breast cancer patients how to navigate the health care system.
