Building Healthy Communities (BHC) Webinars - Outcome Resource Guides

BHC Webinar Series: Orientation to the 10 Outcomes

The California Endowment (TCE) is conducting a series of webinars on each of the 10 outcomes for the BHC program and the Resource Guides developed for each.

Each webinar will focus on one of the 10 outcomes, and will include an introduction to the outcome by TCE staff, an example or case study from a community or systems leader that has been successful in implementing one or more of the strategies described in the outcome, and an overview of the guide by the author or an expert from the field. The webinars will be 90 minutes, with the last half of the time reserved for questions and answers from communities.

Who Should Attend
BHC local leaders, planners, and support team members, including site leaders, facilitators, work group leaders and members, neighborhood representatives, school leaders, service providers, system leaders and others that are actively engaged in the BHC local planning process. We encourage local collaboratives to identify people to participate in all 10 of the webinars. For those who are unable to attend, the webinars will all be recorded and made available for replay.

  • Webinar Outcome One: Kids Coverage

Outcome One: All Children Have Health Coverage
By ensuring that all California children have high-quality, affordable health care coverage, we can at once reduce the number of uninsured, address the health needs of our children and their families, set the tone for implementation of health reform, and lower health costs in the future as healthy children become healthy adults.

    Webinar Date:  Feb. 18, 2:30-4:00 p.m.

  • Webinar Outcome Two: Health Homes

Outcome Two:  Families Have Improved Access to Health Homes that Support Healthy Behaviors

Health homes are a relatively new and increasingly popular model for organizing and delivering patient-centered health care.  TCE is promoting a broader model of “health homes” rather than “medical homes” because of our emphasis on prevention and on using community assets, which include health care providers other than physicians.

    Webinar Date:  Feb. 23, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

  • Webinar Outcome Three: Coordinated Health and Human Services

Outcome Three: Health- and Family-Focused Human Services Shift Resources Toward Prevention
Too often, health and human service systems in low-income communities are not organized to promote optimal health and development. Shifting resources in these systems toward prevention requires change in policy, practice and training, coordinated state and local action, strong partnerships between public sector and community leaders – and time, patience and commitment.

  • Webinar Outcome Five: Violence Prevention

Outcome Five: Children and Their Families Are Safe from Violence in Their Homes and Neighborhoods
Research Most violence is preventable, not inevitable. Violence prevention strategies are most affective when the multiple risk factors associated with violence including poverty, unemployment, discrimination, substance abuse, educational failure, fragmented families, domestic abuse, internalized shame, and feelings of powerlessness are addressed.

Violence prevention strategies should not only address the risk factors, but should also aim to change community behaviors that contribute to empowerment, education, and improved life management skills while fostering healthy communities in which people can grow in dignity and safety.

    Webinar Date:  March 9, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

  • Webinar Outcome Nine: Health Gaps for Boys of Color Are Reduced

Outcome Nine: Health Gaps for Boys and Young Men of Color Are Narrowed
This webinar highlights the health gaps experienced by boys and men of color (BMoC) and offer strategies and examples for counteracting the root causes of disparities. Though we spotlight health disparities among males of color, it is essential to emphasize that these gaps affect whole communities..

    Webinar Date:  March 15, 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
