Access to Health - large

Access to Health

Our goal in this area is to improve the health of underserved individuals and families by expanding access to health and mental health services.

According to the 2005 California Health Interview Survey, more than 6 million Californians were uninsured for all or part of 2005. Of these, more than 1 million California children did not have health coverage for at least part of that year.

Access to health can be achieved through a strong system of primary, preventive health services that are responsive to community needs, coupled with a comprehensive system of health coverage that is simple, affordable and available to all Californians.

Publications Explore Health Coverage of California’s Working Uninsured

Three recent publications, funded in part by The California Endowment, look at the issue of California's working uninsured. The Center on Policy Initiatives' The Working Uninsured: An Analysis of Worker Health Coverage Among California Industries and The State of Health Insurance in California from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research show a decline in job-based health insurance coverage, and Health Coverage Proposals in California: Impact on Businesses from UC Berkeley’s Center for Labor Research finds that some current universal health care plans would likely have a positive net impact on the state’s economy.

Regional Offices of The California Endowment

The California Endowment maintains a regional approach to grant making and has offices throughout the state. With this commitment to a regional presence, The Endowment has program staff actively working in local communities to identify, support and partner with community-based organizations.
