The Legacy of Partnership describes an evaluation of the legacy of the Partnership for the Public’s Health Initiative (PPH) conducted four years after its conclusion. It illuminates what is possible when health departments and communities are able to work successfully together over a long period of time. This evaluation does not reflect the entire legacy of the PPH Initiative, but instead focuses on those partnerships most likely to offer best practices for sustainability.

Men and boys of color face greater health and socio-economic disparities when compared to their white counterparts. But there is also a growing body of research that identifies approaches at the macro, community, interpersonal and individual levels that can improve the disparities facing this population. 
Prevention for a Healthier America
A recent report released by the Trust for America’s Health, Prevention for a Healthier America: Investments in Disease Prevention Yield Significant Savings, Stronger Communities, finds that an investment of $10 per person per year in proven community-based programs to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and prevent smoking and other tobacco use could save California more than $1.7 billion within five years. This is a return of $4.80 for every $1.

Health Inequities in the Bay Area
As important as it is, most experts agree that health care contributes only about 10-15% to health outcomes and life span. Where you live is probably a bigger determinant of your health than whether you have health insurance. People who live in West Oakland, for example, can expect to live on average 10 years less than those who live in the Berkeley Hills. This report examines the health inequities that exist in the San Francisco Bay Area and suggests policy initiatives and activities that will reduce the disparities and improve the overall health throughout the region.

Building a Regional Voice for Environmental Justice
The Center for Justice, Tolerance and Community and a team of researchers from University of California at Santa Cruz, Occidental College and Brown University worked with Communities for a Better Environment, the Liberty Hill Foundation and others to conduct research on environmental inequity in Southern California, documenting racial and other disparities in exposure to local hazards and air pollution.

This new report produced by The California Endowment, in collaboration with the Institute of Medicine and Cause Communications, examines the impact of health and health care disparities within California. The publication underscores the importance of health and health care data collection to identify where and to what extent disparities exist, as well as to measure the progress we are making in remedying the problem.
