Ed Roberts Campus a Vibrant New Center
for People with Disabilities
When The California Endowment was developing its new headquarters and Center for Healthy Communities in downtown Los Angeles, finding ways to share that space with like-minded partners was an integral part of the planning process. Focus group research revealed that lack of affordable office space and meeting space was a critical issue for nonprofits working to address community health issues. The Endowment decided to set aside some space in its new headquarters for three nonprofit resource centers: the Center for Nonprofit Management, Community Partners, and Southern California Grantmakers.

Last year, the city of Berkeley was honored with the Most Accessible City Award from the National Organization on Disability. This year, Berkeley gains further distinction by breaking new ground—literally and figuratively—for the construction of the Ed Roberts Campus. Hailed as the most accessible building in the world, this $45 million, state-of-the-art facility has been designed by and for people with disabilities.

Collaborative Researchers Transcend Borders to Improve Health Access for Migrants
Mexican immigrants, among the lowest wage earners in the United States, receive inadequate health services and, as a result, have the lowest rates of flu shots, dental exams, and regular doctor’s visits in the U.S. These are just some of the findings of researchers with the California-Mexico Health Initiative (CMHI), who say that economic as well as cultural barriers are to blame, with often dire consequences for immigrants and their families.

Center Exhibition Explores Histories of Chinese Communities Through Traditional Health Care Practices

has steadily gained adherents in the United States and, here on the West Coast, TCM’s history is also entwined with that of the many Chinatowns that began to emerge some 150 years ago.
