On Aug. 23, 2007, Dr. Bonnie Sorenson, chief deputy director of the California Department of Public Health, spoke at a press conference on the 15-year anniversary of the California Smokers’ Helpline. Since its 1992 debut, the Helpline has provided services to 430,000 Californians and offers assistance in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and TDD for the hearing impaired.

Shu-Hong Zhu, director of the UC San Diego Tobacco Cessation Center, which runs the Helpline, also spoke at the California Smokers’ Helpline press conference. The conference was used in part to announce new functions of the Helpline, including an enhanced Web site with a click-to-call feature and new text-messaging options.
