April 10 2017

This year, Tax Day is on Tuesday, April 18, 2016. Filing your taxes can be challenging and WE Connect wants you to file stress-free. Here are a few helpful hints to assist you with this year’s tax season.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents
Place all of your important tax documents in a safe place as you receive them. Keep an eye out for your W-2(s), which should have arrived in your mailbox already.
Bring these documents when you file your taxes:

  • Previous tax return
  • Proof of Identity (SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number ‘ITIN’ – for each family member)
  • Proof of income (Including W-2s and 1099 forms)
  • Deductible expenses documentation
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit and faster refund
  • Landlord’s information for renter’s credit

Step 2: Determine Your Eligibility
Take time to research the following tax credits and deductions that may maximize your savings.

Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
The EITC works to benefit working families and individuals within the U.S., and reduces the amount that those who qualify owe for each particular tax season. This credit may even allow you to receive a refund after filing.

The IRS has a full page on all the information you need to determine your eligibility, so make sure to read it here before filing your taxes this year.

California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC)
The California EITC is newly available to Californians in households with lower incomes. CalEITC4Me is a statewide campaign that works to spread awareness about this tax credit to the 600,000 families in California who are eligible, and help file their tax returns. Check out the CalEITC Calculator to determine your eligibility!

Step 3: Ask for Help
Connect with trusted partners like Central California Legal Services (CCLS), United Way  , and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to find in person, trusted assistance.

Step 4: File Your Taxes
Filing your taxes online is easier, safer and faster than snail mail. Having your bank account and routing numbers guarantees a faster, direct deposit refund. Remember Tax Day is on Tuesday, April 18, 2016.
