Available Funding

The following types of grants are available to applicants to help advance The Endowment goals:

Projects

A “project” is a coordinated intervention over a specified period of time to achieve measurable results. Projects may include policy development and advocacy, replication, adaptation or new development of evidence-based program models, community mobilization, organizing and coalition building, community leadership development, startup activities of new organizations, conferences, practice- or policy-oriented research and evaluation.

Capacity-building Activities

Capacity-building grants support activities that strengthen an organization, or a coalition of organizations, to better work toward achievement of their mission and goals. Capacity building may include organizational assessments, strategic planning, fund development, board and staff development, organizational learning and assessment, advocacy, and work to initiate or strengthen collaborative efforts. The result would be an improvement to the organization or coalition.

Core Operating Activities

The California Endowment will consider core operating grants for organizations with annual operating budgets less than $500,000. Most core operating grants will be limited to $50,000 per year or $100,000 over a three-year period. Core operating grants will not be made to replace funding eliminated due to government cutbacks. Core operating grants will be considered for larger organizations when the organization supports a key strategic purpose of one of The Endowment’s goals. Grantees are eligible to receive consecutive core operating grants, although such grants are rare.

Do smaller organizations still fit within The Endowment’s funding strategies?

With this new single-point-of-entry application process, The Endowment is no longer accepting applications for the Local Opportunities Fund, which supported smaller community organizations with grants of $50,000 or less.

While the process may have changed, our commitment to making grants to organizations of all sizes has not. We support a wide range of small and large nonprofit organizations. We believe that the health of communities relies on an active infrastructure of community-based organizations. Often, it is the grassroots, emerging organizations that are likely to focus on creating better outcomes for marginalized communities and populations. We welcome applications from a broad spectrum of organizations including:

  • Grassroots organizations that originate from and represent the populations they serve.
  • Emerging organizations that are either in the early stages of development and lack an established infrastructure or track record, or small organizations with some experience and history which are seeking to grow and expand.
  • Organizations that have not historically engaged in health-related activities, but are using their unique connections with a community to develop or implement a program to address the health needs of that particular community.
