Building Healthy Communities in the State of California

The California Endowment remains committed to our founding mission to improve the health of Californians. The lessons from our first decade as a foundation made it clear that we could enhance the impact of our work by adopting a more tightly focused direction. In 2010, our work will be focused in pursuit of a single vision: Building Healthy Communities in the state of California.

Our Communities

As part of our 10-year strategic direction, The California Endowment launched CalConnect, a Building Healthy Communities network designed as a collaborative environment for our users to create, connect, collaborate, mobilize and change California into a healthier state.

10 Outcomes

The core strategy here is simple in concept. We will select a limited number of communities for deep and comprehensive investments in prevention-oriented partnerships. We will help link the leaders and residents of these communities, and the creativity and lessons they produce, for the purposes of driving a statewide vision for Building Healthy Communities.

The 10 Outcomes we seek are:

  • 1
    All Children Have Health Coverage
  • 2
Families Have Improved Access to a Health Home That Supports Healthy Behaviors
  • 3
Health and Family-Focused Human Services Shift Resources Toward Prevention
  • 4
Residents Live in Communities with Health-Promoting Land-Use, Transportation and Community Development
  • 5
Children and their Families are Safe from Violence in their Homes and Neighborhoods
  • 6
    Communities Support Healthy Youth Development
  • 7
Neighborhood and School Environments Support Improved Health and Healthy Behaviors
  • 8
Community Health Improvements are Linked to Economic Development
  • 9
Health Gaps for Boys and Young Men of Color are Narrowed

Message to Grant Seekers

Welcome. As a grant maker, we are pleased and honored to consider your breakthrough ideas and activities that advance our shared vision of a healthier California. Unfortunately, like many philanthropic organizations, The Endowment has been affected by the troubles on Wall Street, and in our economy. While we are continuing to partner with people and organizations that share our vision for improving the health of their communities, the reality is that we currently have very limited resources available for proposed grants outside of our Building Healthy Communities (BHC) 10-year plan.

APPLICATIONS We are not accepting applications at this time. If after reviewing the 4 Big Results and 10 Outcomes as well as the Message to Grant Seekers you remain interested in applying for a grant, please return to this site on July 6, 2010 to complete a Letter of Inquiry (LOI).

Thank you for being our partner in Building Healthy Communities.
