In our neighborhoods, in our schools, in our grocery stores and our parks—every moment of the day the places where we spend our lives affect how long, and how well, we live.
The latest medical treatment or exercise routine is only part of the equation; research shows that a healthy life is determined in large part by the safety of the streets in the neighborhoods where we live, the classrooms and the cafeterias in our kids’ schools, and access to preventive health.
Children can’t get the exercise they need to grow up strong and healthy if there aren’t safe parks nearby, and families can’t put healthy meals on the table if there’s no place to buy fresh affordable food in their communities. That’s why we all have a shared interest to ensure that Health Happens Here. In our neighborhoods, in our schools and with prevention.

Your neighborhood shouldn't predict how long you live—but it does. The number of parks, availability of fresh foods, access to public transit, and safety of streets after dark all contribute to the overall health of a community and its residents. By recognizing that Health Happens in Neighborhoods, we can change the public conversation regarding land use, food access, community safety, and economic opportunity in order to build stronger California communities with health in mind. The goal is to contribute to the rise of neighborhoods with parks, grocery stores, bike paths and safer places to live and play.

We all recognize that it is better to prevent a disease than to treat it. It is easier to get a flu shot than to be laid up and out of work for a week. It is more affordable to stay healthy through one’s diet than through expensive prescription medications.
Too many Californians, however, aren't connected to preventive health care. Health Happens with Prevention educates key audiences about the benefits of the federal Affordable Care Act and other avenues to preventive health and community wellness. Our shared goal for a stronger state is to connect key groups of Californians with prevention-based health care as envisioned in the new law. |

Schools play a pivotal role in the physical, social, and emotional health of California’s children. They also help determine how successful, productive, and healthy our kids will be later in life. Health Happens in Schools every day through the quality of food and fresh water during meal times, the amount of physical exercise that takes place on campus, and through common-sense discipline policies that hold kids accountable but keep them in the classroom rather than automatically expelling students for minor offenses. The California Teachers Association is in agreement with us that Health Happens in Schools and we stand together with school leaders and educators as they strive to create healthier schools for all California children.
