Yamilex Rustrian came to the United States from Guatemala when she was seven-years-old, only a few days after her father was killed by a gang. In order to protect herself and her younger sister from violence and poverty, she said she had to grow up fast and “become a mom to her sister.” Before becoming a DACA recipient, Yamilex lived in the shadows for fear of being deported. Today, she is a youth organizer for Children Over Politics, an immigration advocacy organization that she co-founded in 2014 to call attention to the humanitarian crisis at the border.
