After decades of failed “lock ‘em up” approaches to criminal justice, California is finally leading our nation in our new direction.

Six months ago, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 47, prioritizing prevention over punishment for certain non-violent offenses like using drugs, shoplifting, and writing bad checks. Proposition 47 is expected to save California counties millions of dollars each year, mostly from reduced jail costs.
