This Mother’s Day letter is intended for the mothers who, at this very moment, are trapped in the tragedy of our nation’s border and immigration crisis.  You may be in the process of seeking asylum, escaping from civil strife, violence, danger for your children or spouse, physical or psychological abuse, or the fear of not being able to feed your family.  You may have come from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, or Haiti.  But hopelessness and desperation drove you away from your home — and hope sent you to our nation’s border.

Perhaps you are fortunate enough to have your children with you at this moment, but perhaps not.  Maybe you know where your child is, or your children are – but perhaps you live with the terror of not knowing their whereabouts at all because our government took your children from you when you came to our border.

Perhaps what guided you to our border was the pursuit of some sense of decency – maybe even prosperity — safety, wellness, and opportunity; that a nation called America might offer some respite in the name of liberty and justice for all.  Especially for your children.  In your journey to our border exercising your right to seek asylum, you may have endured any and all manner of insult and assault along the way – only to discover that upon arriving to America’s border, you have been detained or criminalized for having the audacity to hope and dream.

Perhaps you have moments of feeling very alone in your struggle on behalf of your children.  But you are not alone, on this Mother’s Day, my thoughts and my prayers are focused on you and you should know, you must know, that I am not alone in this support of your journey.  Many people and organizations are working and fighting feverishly in support of your dignity, your value, your worth, your struggle, and your sense of humanity.  As you have battled to endure detention, hungry days, cold nights, violence, anxiety, and fear for your children – those of us fortunate to have more blessings must fight harder and endure as well.  You have my pledge to do so.  I represent an organization of people and this entire organization stands behind you as well.

I pray for God to keep you in His/Her warm embrace, and to give us the strength to fight harder with you and for you.  Stay strong. Wishing you a future filled with Happy Mothers Days.

Una carta especial para el Día de las Madres

Esta carta del Día de las Madres está dirigida a las madres que, en este mismo momento, están atrapadas en la tragedia fronteriza de nuestra nación y la crisis migratoria. Ustedes pueden estar en el proceso de solicitar asilo, huyendo de conflictos civiles, violencia, peligro para sus hijos o a sus parejas, de algún abuso físico o psicológico, o del temor al no poder alimentar a sus familias. Quizás vinieron de Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, México, o Haití. Pero la desesperanza y la desesperación te alejaron de tu casa —y la esperanza las envió a la frontera de nuestro país.

Tal vez ustedes sean afortunados y tengan sus hijos con ustedes en este momento, pero tal vez no. Tal vez usted sabe dónde está su hijo, o sus hijos—pero tal vez usted vive con el terror de no conocer su paradero en absoluto porque nuestro gobierno les arrebató a sus hijos cuando llegaron a nuestra frontera.

Tal vez lo que las guió a nuestra frontera fue la búsqueda de un poco de decencia—tal vez hasta prosperidad—seguridad, bienestar y oportunidad; que un país llamado América podría ofrecerles algún alivio en nombre de la libertad y la justicia para todos. Especialmente para sus hijos. Durante su trayecto a nuestra frontera, ejerciendo su derecho a buscar asilo, puede que haya sufrido toda clase de insulto y asalto—sólo para descubrir que, al llegar a la frontera estadounidense, se han encontrado detenidas o criminalizadas por tener la audacia de sentir esperanza y soñar.

Tal vez pasaron momentos de sentirse muy solas en su lucha por el bienestar de sus hijos. Pero ustedes no están solas. En este Día de la Madres, mis pensamientos y mis oraciones las enfoco en ustedes, y quiero que sepan y que estén seguras de que no soy el único que las apoya. Muchas personas y muchas organizaciones están trabajando y luchando con fervor para defender su dignidad, su valor, su lucha, y su humanidad. Así como ustedes han luchado contra la detención, días hambrientos, noches frías, violencia, ansiedad y temor por sus hijos—aquellos de nosotros afortunados por tener más bendiciones debemos luchar más duro y también perseverar. Les doy mi palabra de que lo haré. Yo represento una organización de personas, y toda esta organización también las respalda.

Ruego que Dios las mantenga en su cálido abrazo, y que nos dé la fortaleza para luchar aún más duro con y por ustedes. Manténganse fuerte. Les deseo un futuro lleno de Días Felices de Madres.
